It's been a while since last having any major news to report on OpenIndiana, the OpenSolaris/Illumos-derived operating system, but they are out today with new test ISOs that incorporate the MATE desktop.
OpenSolaris/OpenIndiana had long been using the GNOME 2.x desktop and now OpenIndiana is preparing for possibly migrating to the MATE Desktop Environment as the fork of GNOME 2. For now the MATE packages are offered alongside GNOME.
The MATE 1.14 desktop is incorporated with many forked GNOME applications. OpenIndiana also packages various GT3-based X-Apps too. Details on the MATE 1.14 desktop for OpenSolaris can be found via OpenIndiana.org's Wiki .
New test ISOs have been spun with MATE 1.14 for those that want to try it out. ISO download links via this mailing list post .
