A quick scan of HN top contributors show no obviously female members

I just took a note at the HN leaderboard ( top 100 contributors ) and tried to figure out if they were male or female. I created a text file with possible gender in second column . M stands for Male, U for Unknown and B for Bot. Here is some terminal output :

$awk '{ print $2 }' top-hn-commenters.txt|grep U | wc -l
27
$awk '{ print $2 }' top-hn-commenters.txt|grep M | wc -l
72
$awk '{ print $2 }' top-hn-commenters.txt|grep B | wc -l
1

What does this mean ?

  1. There is some evidence that women who reveal their gender may not get as much approval as the ones who don’t. This point may be strengthened if some of these ‘Unknown’ tend to be women. This may not be sign of bias.
  2. There may be an advantage to revealing yourself to be a male ( all top 10 contributors are verifiable as male ).
